Chandra and Hubble Space Telescope Study of the Globular Cluster Ngc

چکیده
We report on the Chandra X-ray Observatory observations of the globular cluster NGC 288. We detect four X-ray sources within the core radius and seven additional sources within the half-mass radius down to a limiting luminosity of LX = 7×1030 ergs s−1 (assuming cluster membership) in the 0.3–7 keV band. We also observed the cluster with the Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys and identify optical counterparts to seven X-ray sources out of the nine sources within the HST field-of-view. Based on the X-ray and optical properties, we find 2–5 candidates of cataclysmic variables (CVs) or chromospherically active binaries, and 2–5 background galaxies inside the half-mass radius. Since the core density of NGC 288 is very low, the faint X-ray sources of NGC 288 found in the Chandra and HST observations is higher than the prediction on the basis of the collision frequency. We suggest that the CVs and chromospherically active binaries are primordial in origin, in agreement with theoretical expectation. NGC 6397 is the closest globular cluster, and hence the ideal place to search for faint stellar populations such as cataclysmic variables (CVs). HST and Chandra observers have identified nine certain and likely CVs in this nearby cluster, including several magnetic CV candidates. We have combined our recent UV imagery with archival HST images of NGC 6397 to search for new CV candidates and espe...

Bimodal globular cluster metallicity distributions have now been seen in a handful of large ellipticals. Here we report the discovery of a bimodal distribution in the dominant group elliptical NGC 5846, using the Hubble Space Telescope’s Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2). The two peaks are located at V–I = 0.96 and 1.17, which roughly correspond to metallicities of [Fe/H] = –1.2 and –0....

We present new metallicity estimates for globular cluster candidates in the Sd spiral NGC 300, one of the nearest spiral galaxies outside the Local Group. We have obtained optical spectroscopy for 44 Sculptor Group globular cluster candidates with the Boller and Chivens (B&C) spectrograph on the Baade Telescope at Las Campanas Observatory. There are 2 globular clusters in NGC 253 and 14 objects...

We have obtained optical spectroscopy for 44 Sculptor Group globular cluster candidates with the Boller and Chivens (B&C) spectrograph on the Baade Telescope at Las Campanas Observatory. Nine of these objects appear to be genuine old globular...
